Projection Mapping Installation

2026.03

LA

This project is an interactive projection installation inspired by Dunhuang murals and reclining Buddha imagery.
A Dunhuang-style animated mural is projected onto a 3D printed reclining Buddha sculpture. The surface appears intact and luminous at first, suggesting stillness, spirituality, and historical continuity.
Using a camera and TouchDesigner, the system tracks the viewer’s hand in real time. When a hand approaches the sculpture and attempts to touch it, the projected image begins to fade precisely at the point of contact. Colors desaturate, textures deteriorate, and fragments of the mural gradually disappear.
Unlike a full-surface transformation, the damage is localized and accumulative, emphasizing the trace of human intervention.
The interaction reflects the irreversible impact of time and human behavior on cultural heritage. Here, touch is not neutral—it becomes a metaphor for erosion, possession, and loss. Each gesture leaves a mark, and each mark contributes to a slow, unavoidable disappearance.
The work suggests that even acts of curiosity, care, or admiration can alter what they intend to preserve. The reclining Buddha, a symbol of transcendence and permanence, becomes a fragile surface that records human presence.
Through this interaction, the audience experiences a subtle tension: the desire to connect through touch, and the realization that such contact may cause irreversible damage.
